Emporio - Get 'Lost' In Tradition

Emporio village street.

Emporio is a quaint village situated on the big plain in the southern part of the island, about 12 km from Fira.

It is one of the largest Santorini villages with nearly 1800 permanent residents, who speak a preserved local dialect.

The most characteristic feature of the village, we believe, is how it resembles a large labyrinth with its criss-crossing, and sometimes very narrow, streets. In fact, it is not all that difficult to get lost!

We speak from experience. Even a friend we were with, and who works as a guide here, got a little confused at times and had to ask locals for directions.

It is a great way to spend a couple of hours, though, to stroll the endless alleyways between picturesque little stone houses that seem to have been thrown together at random.

Highlights

The first impression of this old merchant's town should strike you before you even enter. Many old windmills are lined up along the hillside and they are quite a sight.

Under the Venetian rule (14th and 15th century), a castle was built here for the feudal rulers. Unfortunately, not that much remains to be seen of the castle itself, but two of its entrances are quite well preserved.

Another castle ruin, from the Byzantine period, sits on the hill just behind the village.

The heart of old Emporio can be said to be around the church of Palia Panagia (Old Virgin Mary). This is one of the island's oldest churches and it's most striking feature is its bell tower with a beautifully carved wooden dome.

The village is also the place for a festival in honor of Agios Averkios, the protector of wines. It takes place yearly on the 22nd of October, and needless to say a lot of wine is enjoyed on this day!

Once being the most important merchant town on Santorini, it still retains some attraction to visitors looking to do some shopping. Look for local products such as sun dried tomatoes, wine, honey, ceramics and leather.

Access

Emporio is easily accessible. As it is on the road to the popular beach resort of Perissa it is served by frequent buses.

It is also easy to find your way there by car. Take the main road south out of Fira towards Megalochori. After passing Megalochori just stay on the road until you reach Emporio.

Accommodation

There are several options available if you want to stay in Emporio.

Keep in mind, though, because it is so close to the popular south-east Santorini beaches, finding a room in Emporio during high season may be difficult.
